Brasenose Ale

Each year on Shrove Tuesday the customary Ale Verses are held in Hall, a long upheld Brasenose tradition, which used to be accompanied by beer brewed in the College Brew House. After the demolition of the Brew House in the 1880s, the much loved College brew ceased to exist – much to the students’ dismay. We hold numerous Tradesmen’s Bills detailing the existence of the Brew House – including the final valuation for its disposal (pictured). The Archives also holds an almost complete collection of the Ale Verses from 1815. We are looking forward to hearing what the 2012 verses have to offer and to the first Library and Archives podcast about the verses, which should be published next week!
