Cartes de Visite

Amongst the latest items to be catalogued in the Archives are many pictures and photographs of College. These include a splendid collection of 16 Cartes de Visite. These cartes first became popular in Britain  in the Victorian era when cartes of the royal family appeared. The craze for collecting these popular cartes became known as cartomania. Their heyday was the 1860s and we have dated the 16 cartes in the Brasenose collection to this era. Each carte shows how little the exterior fabric of the buildings has changed over the last century.
